090617: Genesis 29-35
Genesis 29
- correlations: Jacob vs. Esau, Leah vs. Rachel, Joseph vs. his older brothers etc. all correspond with Jesus’s rule for Kingdom of Heaven (the last shall become the first, the rich will become the poor, the servant shall become the master)
Genesis 31
- Rachel stole Laban’s gods à people may have practiced multiple religions
Genesis 32
- Israel: “God contended,” “he struggles with God”
- Jacob retained in his body (permanent hip injury), and Israel in her dietary practice (do not eat tendon attached to the socket of the hip), a perpetual reminder of this fateful encounter with God.
Genesis 35
- Jacob: “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.” à worshipping any god other than God the Father is wrong and unclean, hence here, Jacob rectifies the situation (i.e. Rachel stealing Laban’s gods).

People die first and then were “gathered to his people” = Those who die gather at Abraham’s bosom

Philistines originally were an ally of the Jewish people but then became enemies.

Jacob had a dream of the Stairway to Heaven in the land of Israel, near Jerusalem. This is one of the few dreams that have not been interpreted, suggesting what Jacob saw in the dream may be real, hence forgoing the need for a transportation.

- 2nd coming: "Look, he is coming with the clouds..."
- 7 churches in the province of Asia were created by Paul (his mission after Christ's death)
- 3 interpretation of the letters to the 7 churches:
** "just is" messages to the churches
** 7 types of Christians
** 7 types of Churches in chronologically order
e.g.
1. Ephesus -- early Church
2. Smyrna
3. Pergamum
4. Thyatira
5. Sardis
6. Philadelphia -- the Church that leads up to the Tribulation, includes the "overcomers"
- Jesus: "Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on earth. I am coming soon... Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God..."
7. Laodicea -- the Church of those who are going to be left behind, includes those who are "lukewarm"
- Jesus: "Because you are lukewarm--neither hot or cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth... You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But you do not realizae that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked."

- His daughters slept with his father, and their descendents became enemies of Israelites.
Genesis 20 “Abraham and Abimelech”
- God honors those of good faith (e.g. Abimelech)
- Abraham continues to distrust others, and in the course, deceives them; this shows he was imperfect (i.e. Abraham was NOT flawless!!)
Genesis 21 “The Birth of Isaac”
- Shows God keeps his promises
Genesis 22 “Abraham Tested”
- Abraham may doubt others, but his faith is solid, i.e. he puts God before everything else.
- Note that his son was not a small baby but a teenager capable of thought, i.e. his son trusted his father’s decision and his father’s fear of God.
- At this point, it is becoming more and more evident that even before the Ten Commandments were established (i.e. before the Laws were established), Abraham’s actions showed that the basic laws were already being followed.

090513: Genesis 17-19

Genesis 17
1. Change of name = change in a person due to the covenant made.
2. Most quoted phrase: "You will be the father of many nations." (17:4)
3. The covenant
What God will do for Abraham
- Fruitful (includes having lots of children and prosperity)
Ex. Father of nations, Kings will come from you, Whole land of Canaan
- This covenant is everlasting (continues down to his descendants / generations)
- God will be their God.
What Abraham will do for God
- Keep the covenant.
- Sign of covenant = Every male among you shall be circumcised.
*This is similar to American vows are based on Jewish wedding.
The vows state....This is what she would do for him, this is what he would do for her.
And then they sign the contract.
4. Why Circumcision?
- God said so.
- Man only (women just have to uphold the covenant) because men are in charge of the households
- Good for hygiene (decreases UTI and viral / bacterial transmission)
Genesis 18-19
1. Things will happen, even it you don't believe. But do not doubt God's power.
2. lord = master, one who has power over you.
my lord = a sign of respect
Lord = God
3. Three = divinity.
One is God. Who are the other two? The bible doesn't specifically say, but judging from Genesis 19, I think the other two are angels.
4. Abraham pleads for Sodom
- God is patient. God listens to Abraham's pleads. (And things changed because of Abraham's pleads)
- somehow God hear about the outcry of the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah and God will go and find out.
- God spared at least 4 people, possibly 6 people.
- The English word, sodomy & sodomize, comes from the perversions of Sodom.
- Two lessons:
Lot tried to avoid the wickedness by offering his daughters = > homosexual is not okay
Angels did not let them rape the daughters (made them blind) = > rape is not okay
- God remember's Abraham's plead. He also understands it is not about sparing the city, but sparing the righteous people.
- Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back. Why? Note that she was not necessarily punished for not listening to God, but rather God warns us against danger. By not listening, we put ourselves in danger, and thus punish ourselves. Thus we should do as God say because God said so.
Two ways to look at this:
Her heart is not pure (disobedience). Looking back is a sign of longing for the city.
She was not righteous. (Note that she would have been fine if she got to the town and then look at Sodom. Just not when she was running away from Sodom.)
- Is it possible to be raining burning sulfur? The mechanism is possible (ex. volcano), but the possibility of all this occurring at the same time is very low.
