090121: Romans 9

Romans 9:1-29 “God’s Sovereign Choice”
“It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”

Romans 9:30-33 “Israel’s Unbelief”
“That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because thy pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works.”

paradigm shift:
John 1:1 "In the Beginning was the Word"
John 1:14 "The Word became flesh"

Christ is the new paradigm:
- Christ is the lens through which we see all things and have them make sense
- Christ fulfills:
1. fullness of diety (completely God)
2. all of humanity (all of man)
3. to have the above 2 characters united in one person w/o misin gor diminishin either of those two natures

Romans 7:1-6 “An Illustration from Marriage”
- “Born-again Christian”

Romans 7:7-25 “Struggling with Sin”
- A personal account of the struggles Paul himself had before coming to Christ
- “But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire.”
- “Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Romans 8:1-17 “Life through the Spirit”
- “If Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
- “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit, that we are God’s children.”

Romans 8:18-27 “Future Glory”
- “Hope that is seen is no hope at all.”
- “If we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.”

Romans 8:28-39 “More Than Conquerors”
- “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
