100127: The Day of Atonement and Jesus Christ

Leviticus 16 (the scapegoat starts at 16:7, but the earlier stuff is a good foundation)
The Day of Atonement
1The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the LORD. 2The LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.
* Aaron is the high priest, performing this ceremony as a sin offering for the entire Israelite community. This is done once a year.
5From the Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
6“Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household. 7Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 8He is to cast lots for the two goats—one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat.a
11“Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. 12He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. 13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the Testimony, so that he will not die. 14He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.
15“He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it. 16In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the Tent of Meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
18“Then he shall come out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. 19He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.
20“When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. 21He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. 22The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.
29“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselvesb and not do any work—whether native-born or an alien living among you— 30because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins. 31It is a sabbath of rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance.
34“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.” And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Mark 15:1-15
Jesus Before Pilate

Luke 23:32-46
The Crucifixion
32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”e And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”
40But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.f
43Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Jesus’ Death
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Scripture Readings:
Leviticus 16 (the scapegoat starts at 16:7, but the earlier stuff is a good foundation)
*This is the basis for Christ
*Man cannot place his eyes on the Lord.
*A Day of Atonement (So a special day): happens on the 10th day of seventh month
*Sin offering vs Atonement offering (high priest giving offering for entire Israelite community)
*Atonement is like a special sin offering.
Because it's not just washing your sin, but everybody's sins!
*Two goats (verse 7)
*Bulls: sin offering (for his own sins)
Before he can atone for everything else, he needs to atone himself first.
(You need to be clean yourself before you can clean others.)
*coals in front of the the atonement cover, and sprinkle bull's blood on the atonement cover
(7 times)
*then same thing with the goat
-> both blood cleaned the most high place.
*Scapegoat ( a man makes sure the scapegoat doesn't come back, stay in the desert)
*Ark of Covenant was built during Moses time.
*7 = number of completion
*Place red scarf or linen around the neck to know that goat is the scapegoat.
You don't want to touch it, because then you'll have to clean yourself (because you've touched the sin). Sometimes, they would push the goat off the cliff to prevent the goat from coming back to town. Note: can't kill the goat like you would slaughter.
*The atonement (goat) has to come inside the community because it is atonement for the community.

Mark 15:1-15
Luke 23:32-46

*Sanhedrin = most powerful at that time.
Jesus: first coming = savior
second coming = king (1000 years of reign)
*Perfect lamb is innocent.
*Sanhedrin changed the crowd's mind to have Jesus killed.
Sanhedrin also convinced the crowd to riot if Jesus is not killed.
And so Pontius Pilate killed one man to prevent the riot.
*The curtain torn into two: no longer need a high priest to wash sins.
---> because Jesus has taken all our sins away.
(The curtain is the one that separates the area of high priest and the average Joe.)

Jesus is both goats.
Barabbas is the one that get to live (even though he does not wash away the sins...)
Jesus's blood cleans the heavenly temple.
So that, after Jesus, when you die a Christian, you go to heaven.
Jesus is also the high priest of heaven.

Luke 22

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."

Mark 14

Gethsemane

32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."
35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba,[e] Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

John 17

sweating of blood
cup is the cup of suffering
Jesus took on the sins of the world in the garden.
I don't want to do this unless it absolutely has to be done.
He gets so wary and pain and anguish that an angel had to come to strengthen him.
He was sweating blood (red scarf on goat)

-> bull offering (makes himself clean) and then cleans all the other people.

WWJD = what would Jesus Do?

Video: Perry Stone (Help! Get that Goat out of my Bed)
Red Thread identified the Goat
Knew goat died because the red thread on the temple door would turn white (the thief that believed in God that died on the cross with Christ).
Mount of Azazel (Azazel is the word of goat that is sent off the cliff).
Barabbas (Bar = son, abbas = father)

Romans 16:17: mark those that are sinful...
17I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.

Luke 11: 24
24"When an evil[a] spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.'

Yonkippur = day of atonement
Don't let unclean spirits back into your spirit.
(unclean spirit = demon, fallen angel)
If it comes back, you get seven times worst ones.

Leviticus 4:11 (sin offering)
Leviticus 5:15 (trespass offering)
Matthew 6:9-15 (Lord's prayer - forgive us our trespasses)
John 20:22-23

Remit:
1) to dismiss or release (acts 2:28)
2) removing a sin death (Mathews 26:28)
3) to sin away or to lose like the scapegoat (Leviticus 16)

Do not hold a grudge - because you haven't forgiven people.
If someone wrongs you and then makes it right and then you don't forgive them, then it's like going to bed with sins...you are holding on to the sin.
When someone sins (it goes both way).

Mathew 6:14-15
You cannot be forgiven by God until you get the goat (sin) out of your (bed).
If you do not forgive, neither will your God forgive your trespasses.
Before you give a gift to the altar, you must reconcile with your brothers.

Matthew 6:14-15
14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Mark 11:25-26
25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."[g]

Mathew 5:23-24
23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

Proverbs 18:21
Words are created forces.
Writing something on the post (as oppose to speak)...writing words can have an impact.

"The tongue has the power of life and death"

Concluding questions:
What do you think your words do to people?
