How to Study and Teach the Bible as Jesus Did

Notes from Sunday's sermon by Pastor Mark Driscoll
http://marshill.com/media/luke

The Bible is a book that God wrote, and it's all about Jesus.

The best way to read the Bible and teach others about the Bible is to do it the way Jesus did (Luke 24:13-35):

1. Events: Every event documented in the Bible can be linked to Jesus

- Passover: blood from sacrificed animals were used to protect the people from God's wrath; blood of Jesus made us righteous again, saving us from God's wrath

- Yum Kippur (Day of Atonement): one goat was sacrificed to atone for everyone's sins for that year, while another goat (the scapegoat) was sent away with the sins of the people placed on the goat; Jesus is our great high priest who cleansed us from our sins and took away our sins

2. Titles: Jesus attributes titles of God mentioned throughout the Bible to Himself

- the alpha and the omega: God is beyond time

- the Son of Man (Daniel 7:13-14)

- the suffering servant

3. Prophecies: Events were written about Jesus thousands and hundred of years before Jesus' birth (Review and compare the following documentations with the Gospels)

- Genesis 3:15, 4000 BC: virgin birth of Jesus (note the lack of the mentioning of a earthly father; knowing the Jewish culture, the fact that only Mary was mentioned suggest Jesus had no earthly father)

- Genesis 17:19, 2000 BC: Jesus will be born of the line of Abraham

- Isaiah 7:14, 700 BC: A virgin is going to have a baby; she's going to have a son named Emanuel (God's with us)

- Micah 5:2, 700 BC: Jesus would be born in Bethelhem

- Malachi 3:1, 400 BC: Documents how we would know Jesus is coming

- Isaiah 35:5-6, 700 BC: Documents how we would know Jesus would be the One

- Zachariah 11:12-13, 500 BC: Jesus would be betrayed by his friend for exactly 30 pieces of silver

- Psalms 22:16, 1000 BC: Jesus' crucifixion was predicted hundreds of years before Jesus' birth; in fact, this passage also predicted crucifixion, as it was not even invented as a death sentence at the time it was written!

- Isaiah 53:8-11, 700 BC: Documents how Jesus would die and be buried

4. Christophanies: Appearances of Jesus prior to His earthly birth

- Genesis 32: Jacob wrestled with Jesus

- Exodus 3: Moses conversed with a burning bush, aka Jesus

- Daniel 3: Shadrah, Meshach, and Abednego walked out of the den of fire with Jesus

- Isaiah 6: Describes the glory of Jesus, cf John 12:41

5. Types: Objects and persons are used as metaphors or symbols of Jesus

- 1 Corinthians: Jesus is the last Adam
* The 1st Adam sinned in the garden at a tree; the 2nd Adam never sinned and prayed for us in the garden of Gethsemane prior to His sacrificial death
* The 1st Adam was naked and not ashamed; the 2nd Adam was stripped naked and killed in shame
* The 1st Adam brought thorns; the 2nd Adam wore a crown of thorns
--> We are either born as the 1st Adam or born again in Jesus.

- Other types: Prophet, Priest, Shepherd, Judge

6. Like Service: Traits of Biblical figures that foreshadow greater traits of Jesus

- Cain & Abel: Jesus is the greater Abel (full of love and righteousness), and we're the greater Cain (full of hatred and sin)

- Jesus is the Greater Abraham

- Jesus is the Greater Isaac: Isaac carried his own wood to his sacrificial death. This was stopped by God, who would later sacrifice His one and only Son, Jesus, who carried His own cross for the crucifixion

- Jesus is the Greater Jacob: Jacob wrestled with God with the tasks God had given him, just as Jesus wrestled with God in the Garden of Gethsemane

- Jesus is the Greater Joseph: Joseph was betrayed by his brothers but ultimately rose to great power and saved multitudes of people; Jesus also went through similar circumstances and would save multitudes of multitudes of people

-  Jesus is the Greater Moses: Moses was a man of humble background that was given the mission to lead his people; Jesus also came from a humble background, with the mission to free His people from sin

- Jesus is the Greater Job: Job suffered through Satan's temptations and did not give in; Jesus also resisted Satan's temptations and will eventually conquer Satan

- Jesus is the Greater David: David was the unexpected one who came from an unexpected place and rose to kingship; Jesus was also a nobody from nowhere who will return as the King of kings

- Jesus is the Greater Jonah: Jonah was in the belly of a fish for 3 days and 3 nights; Jesus was buried for 3 days and 3 nights

- Jesus is the Greater Boaz: Boaz was the kinsman redeemer who welcomed and loved Ruth, who, like us, was an undeserving, unlovable foreigner
